Hexanaut.io is a multiplayer territory game where you capture hexagons, cut enemy tails, control Totems, reach 20% of the map, and defend the crown.
Hexanaut.io is a real-time multiplayer territory game where you move across a hexagonal arena and claim land by drawing loops outside your base. Every time you leave your territory, a vulnerable tail forms behind you. Return safely to your own land to capture the enclosed hexagons, grow your territory, and increase your speed. The main goal is to control 20% of the map, become King, and defend that position long enough to win.
The game was created by Exodragon Games, a developer focused on browser-based multiplayer .io games. Hexanaut.io combines the territory-capturing formula with power-granting Totems, direct player elimination, multiple game modes, rankings, and a special King phase that changes how opponents react to the leading player.
You begin with a small safe territory. Moving beyond its border creates a colored tail that follows your route. If you travel back into your territory and complete a loop, every hexagonal tile enclosed by that path becomes yours.
Larger captures can expand your percentage quickly, but traveling farther from safety also exposes a longer tail. Another player can eliminate you by cutting that trail before you reconnect with your territory. You can do the same to opponents when they leave their own land.
Capturing territory also contributes to leveling and provides speed bonuses. This means expansion improves more than your score: successful captures can make movement faster as the match develops.
The main target is not complete control of the arena. Hexanaut.io requires you to reach 20% map ownership to become King. Once that happens, a three-minute countdown begins. You need to stay above the required territory percentage until the timer finishes.
Becoming King gives you advantages, including a speed bonus and visibility of player positions on the minimap. There is also a major drawback: the other players can see where the King is located. A comfortable lead can therefore turn into a period where several opponents deliberately attack your borders and exposed tail.
When a King exists, eliminated opponents cannot simply keep returning indefinitely. The official rules also provide another route to victory by clearing the remaining opponents from the arena.
Totems are special structures scattered around the arena. Capturing one adds a passive advantage while it remains under your control, making some parts of the map strategically more valuable than ordinary hexagons.
| Totem | Effect |
|---|---|
| Speed Totem | Provides an additional movement speed bonus. |
| Spreading Totem | Automatically captures nearby hexagons over time. |
| Spy Dish | Reveals additional territory information on the minimap. |
| Teleport Gate | Teleports you a long distance across your own territory. |
| Slowing Totem | Creates an area that slows opponents entering its effect zone. |
Totems can influence where you expand. A small capture that secures an important Totem may offer more tactical value than a larger piece of empty territory, particularly when you are approaching the King threshold.
Hexanaut.io supports both mouse steering and keyboard movement in its current browser version.
The current game includes several modes built around the same territory system but with different rules and team structures.
PRO modes add airdrops that appear on your territory. Picking one up gives you a one-use item that must be activated manually. Current official items include offensive tools such as the Cannon and Scissors, territory tools such as the Capture Grenade and Capture Rake, and defensive or mobility options including the Shield and Speed Cell.
Because these items are limited rather than permanent upgrades, timing matters. A Shield is more valuable when your tail is about to become exposed to an opponent, while a Capture Grenade can help increase territory without drawing the same type of long loop.
Large captures look efficient, but they expose a much longer tail. Early in a match, use shorter loops to establish a wider safe base before attempting more ambitious expansions.
The safest elimination opportunity often appears when another player creates a long trail outside their territory. Cutting that trail can remove the opponent without requiring you to follow their movement directly.
Your own territory is your strongest defensive area. If an opponent begins moving toward your exposed trail, shortening the capture and reconnecting early is usually safer than insisting on completing a huge loop.
Do not judge every direction only by empty territory. Capturing a useful Totem can provide speed, map information, automatic expansion, mobility, or a slowing zone that continues helping after the initial capture.
Becoming King reveals your position to opponents. Before taking the final territory needed to reach the threshold, try to maintain a compact region with several safe directions for short defensive captures.
A thin expansion deep into another player's area may capture tiles quickly, but it also creates an easy-to-reach trail. Take territory in sections so you can return to safety before an opponent cuts across your route.
Hexanaut.io includes a ranked progression system with tiers such as Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, Master, Champion, and Elite. The game also awards coins that can be spent on cosmetic customization rather than changing the basic territory rules.
Because the core match resets around territory control, long-term progression does not replace the need to survive each round. Expanding efficiently, protecting your tail, controlling useful Totems, and handling the King phase remain the central skills.
If you enjoy competitive browser games based around controlling space and outmaneuvering other players, these titles are also available on YaloGames.
Your main objective is to capture territory until you control 20% of the map, become King, and keep your territory above that threshold for three minutes.
Leave your existing territory, draw a path around hexagonal tiles, and reconnect with your own land. The enclosed area then becomes part of your territory.
When an opponent is outside their territory, crossing their exposed tail eliminates them. Head-to-head collisions can eliminate both players unless the encounter happens under the protection of your own territory.
Totems provide passive bonuses such as extra speed, automatic territory growth, minimap information, teleportation across your land, or an area that slows enemies.
Hexanaut.io was developed by Exodragon Games, which also creates other browser-based multiplayer .io games.
Hexanaut.io rewards controlled expansion rather than blindly drawing the largest possible loop. Grow your territory in manageable sections, cut exposed enemy tails, capture Totems that improve your position, and prepare for increased pressure before reaching the 20% King threshold. Once the crown appears, protecting your territory for the final three-minute countdown becomes more important than continuing to expand recklessly.
