Kingdom Rush Frontiers is a fantasy tower defense game where you build towers, command heroes, summon reinforcements, and stop increasingly dangerous waves.
Kingdom Rush Frontiers is a fantasy tower defense strategy game where you build defenses beside enemy routes, deploy troops, command a hero, summon reinforcements, and use powerful spells to stop waves from reaching the exit. The sequel moves the campaign through deserts, jungles, caves, and the underworld while introducing new enemies, specialized tower upgrades, stage mechanics, and boss battles.
Kingdom Rush Frontiers was developed by Ironhide Game Studio. Ironhide lists the original release date as June 6, 2013, while the browser edition later appeared on Armor Games in November 2013. The expanded Steam edition was released in July 2016.
Enemies enter each stage through one or more routes and move toward your defensive line's exit. You place towers only on designated building sites, then improve those defenses as defeated enemies provide additional gold.
The four basic tower families cover different jobs. Ranged towers provide fast physical attacks, barracks deploy soldiers who can block ground enemies, mage towers specialize in magical damage, and artillery damages groups. Each family can eventually branch into one of two advanced tower specializations, giving the game eight elite tower choices.
You also control resources outside the towers themselves. Reinforcements temporarily add soldiers to the battlefield, Rain of Fire provides direct area damage, and a Hero can be moved around the map to support weak lanes or fight important enemies.
The browser version combines mouse interaction with several keyboard shortcuts. Armor Games documents shortcuts for the main spells, Hero selection, cancelling actions, and pausing.
Each of the four core tower families eventually branches into two advanced options. These eight specializations provide different offensive, defensive, and support roles.
| Base Type | Specializations |
|---|---|
| Ranged | Crossbow Fort and Tribal Axethrowers |
| Barracks | Assassin's Guild and Knights Templar |
| Magic | Archmage Tower and Necromancer Tower |
| Artillery | DWAARP and Battle-Mecha T200 |
The specializations are not simple damage upgrades. Assassins can bring offensive abilities to a choke point, Necromancers add undead support, Crossbow Forts emphasize ranged pressure, while DWAARP and Battle-Mecha provide very different approaches to artillery. The game includes more than 18 tower abilities across these advanced defenses.
Heroes fight directly on the battlefield and can be repositioned during a stage. Unlike fixed towers, a Hero can move from one route to another when enemy pressure changes.
The browser edition originally featured nine heroes according to Armor Games, while later expanded releases increased the roster to 16. This difference is important when comparing the older browser version with the current Steam and official editions.
Heroes become especially useful around choke points. Place one near barracks or summoned reinforcements so enemies remain within tower range longer, then move the Hero when another lane needs support.
Call Reinforcements summons two temporary soldiers. They can engage ground enemies and delay them in place, effectively giving nearby towers additional time to attack. The spell has a short recharge compared with major damage powers, so regular use can significantly improve lane control.
Instead of dropping reinforcements directly beside the exit every time, place them inside strong tower coverage. A few seconds of blocking beside artillery, mages, or ranged towers can produce much more value than fighting enemies in an isolated section of the route.
Kingdom Rush Frontiers contains more than 40 enemy types in its expanded editions. The roster includes desert creatures, tribal units, shamans, underground monsters, dragons, and other enemies with distinct abilities.
This makes tower variety important. Physical damage may struggle against heavily armored units, while magical attacks can be less efficient against enemies with magic resistance. Flying units also bypass ordinary barracks blocking, so ranged coverage remains necessary even when your frontline is strong.
Stage-specific threats add another layer. Ironhide highlights unique features across the campaign, including special units and major boss encounters.
After completing campaign stages, Kingdom Rush Frontiers provides additional challenges through Classic, Heroic, and Iron modes. The full game also offers three difficulty settings.
Heroic and Iron challenges can alter wave composition, available towers, lives, or other restrictions. They reward understanding how each tower type contributes instead of relying on a single familiar setup for every stage.
Place barracks where soldiers can stop enemies inside the attack radius of several damage towers. A strong choke point lets multiple defenses concentrate fire on the same targets.
Do not rely entirely on archers or mages. Different enemies resist different forms of damage, so combining tower families reduces the chance that one enemy type can walk through your entire setup efficiently.
The spell recharges quickly and creates temporary blockers. Place them where the extra delay gives nearby towers more attack time rather than saving them indefinitely.
A Crossbow Fort may benefit a long firing lane, while barracks specializations are more useful near an actual choke point. Artillery gains value where groups remain clustered together.
A Hero is one of the few defenses that can respond to changing pressure. Move them toward a weak lane, a dangerous enemy, or a boss instead of treating the Hero like a fixed tower.

Your goal is to build and upgrade defenses that stop enemy waves from reaching the end of each route.
There are eight advanced tower specializations, two for each of the four basic tower families.
The expanded game advertises more than 40 enemy types with different abilities and combat properties.
The older browser edition lists nine heroes, while the expanded current edition contains 16.
Kingdom Rush Frontiers was developed by Ironhide Game Studio. Ironhide lists its original release date as June 6, 2013.
Kingdom Rush Frontiers rewards players who build around the shape of each battlefield rather than following one fixed tower pattern. Create choke points, combine physical and magical damage, keep Reinforcements active, reposition your Hero as pressure shifts, and choose specialized towers according to the enemies and routes ahead. The deeper you progress into the desert, jungle, and underworld, the more important those combinations become.
