Backrooms is a first-person horror puzzle game where you explore a strange maze, manage stamina, find hidden passages, solve puzzles, and avoid enemies.
Backrooms is a first-person horror puzzle game that traps you inside a maze of unsettling rooms filled with switches, traps, hidden passages, and hostile enemies. The browser version covered here was created by Logan Zhang, Oleg Ivlev, Emily Hao, and Isabella Blair. Rather than simply wandering through yellow corridors, you must interact with the environment, manage your stamina, solve puzzles, and keep moving through increasingly dangerous areas.
The game combines exploration with environmental problem-solving. Corridors can hide routes that are easy to miss, objects may need to be activated before another area becomes accessible, and enemies make it dangerous to spend too long searching one location.
Backrooms is structured as a first-person dungeon puzzle. You move directly through the maze, inspect rooms from your character's perspective, and interact with objects that can affect your progress. Switches, traps, hidden passages, enemies, an inventory system, and environmental puzzles all contribute to the challenge.
The environment therefore matters as much as the creatures inside it. A hallway that appears useless may contain another route, while a new room can introduce a mechanism you need to understand before moving forward.
Sprinting provides extra speed when danger approaches, but stamina prevents you from running continuously. The game's stamina system can also affect movement when the meter becomes depleted, making resource management part of navigation rather than something that matters only during enemy encounters.
The HTML5 version uses keyboard movement together with mouse or keyboard interaction. These controls are listed by the game's developer.
Sprinting can help you cross exposed areas or react when an enemy becomes dangerous, but the stamina bar means speed is a limited resource. Running everywhere may leave the meter depleted at exactly the moment you need to escape.
The game's stamina mechanics also affect jumping and movement when energy becomes too low. This makes controlled movement more reliable than treating every hallway like a race.
During quieter sections, walking gives stamina time to recover. When you enter a suspicious room or notice an enemy nearby, having a reserve available gives you more options.
The maze contains more than corridors. Backrooms is described by its developers as a dungeon puzzle containing switches, traps, hidden passages, and enemies. That combination means getting lost is not always solved by choosing another hallway. Sometimes you need to understand what an object in the room does.
When a route seems to end, return to nearby rooms and check for interactable objects you may have passed. A switch or hidden opening can be more important than continuing deeper into another corridor.
The game also includes a pillar puzzle in one of its expanded spaces. This reinforces the importance of studying the environment rather than expecting every obstacle to be solved through movement alone.
Hostile encounters create pressure while you explore. The game includes enemies and a boss encounter, so preserving movement space becomes important when entering unfamiliar rooms.
A narrow corridor can limit the directions available to you, while a larger room usually provides more space to react. Before approaching something suspicious, notice where you entered and whether you have a clear path back.
Stamina also becomes especially valuable here. If you have already exhausted it while exploring an empty hallway, you have fewer options when an enemy suddenly forces you to move quickly.
Do not automatically sprint through every corridor. Walking preserves stamina so you can accelerate when an enemy, trap, or dangerous room creates an actual reason to move faster.
Switches and hidden passages are part of the game's design. If you enter a room and immediately leave because there is no obvious exit, you may miss the mechanism needed to continue.
Similar-looking corridors can make navigation confusing. When you reach a major intersection, notice distinctive rooms, objects, or structures nearby. These landmarks can help you recognize when you have returned to an earlier section.
When approaching an enemy or suspicious area, avoid positioning yourself where only one narrow path remains available. Knowing where you can retreat makes it easier to react without wasting time searching for a doorway.
The inventory can be opened with the I key. Reviewing what you collected can remind you that an item may connect to a previously encountered obstacle or puzzle.
The Backrooms can look repetitive, but interactive mechanisms make small differences important. A strange pillar, switch, opening, or newly accessible room may provide more useful information than another long corridor.
Many games based on the Backrooms focus almost entirely on wandering or escaping from a monster. This version adds a stronger dungeon-puzzle structure. Switches, environmental traps, hidden passages, inventory management, stamina, enemies, and puzzle areas give you several problems to solve while navigating the maze.
The browser release is an HTML5 game built with Unity, and its later changes added features including the stamina system, additional spaces, a boss enemy, and the pillar puzzle.

Yes. Press I to toggle the inventory while exploring.
The HTML5 version covered here credits Logan Zhang, Oleg Ivlev, Emily Hao, and Isabella Blair as its creators.
Backrooms combines first-person maze exploration with puzzles, stamina management, hidden routes, traps, and dangerous enemies. Move carefully when the corridors are quiet, preserve enough stamina to react when something goes wrong, investigate suspicious objects, and reconsider earlier rooms when the obvious path stops progressing. Escaping the confusion depends on understanding the environment instead of simply running farther into it.
